I Think I Have
The Flu

Signs and Symptoms

Influenza usually starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms:

• Fever (usually high)
• Headache
• Tiredness (can be extreme)
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Body aches
• Diarrhea and vomiting (more common among children than adults)

Having these symptoms does not always mean that you have the flu. Many different illnesses, including the common cold, can have similar symptoms. It can be difficult to diagnose the flu based on symptoms alone. In some cases a doctor's exam may be needed to tell whether you have developed the flu or a complication of the flu. Some screening tests can help determine if you have the flu. Testing should be within the first 2 or 3 days of illness.

Most people with influenza do not need special drugs or treatments. You should:

• Rest
• Drink lots of fluids
• Eat a light diet
• Stay at home
• Take acetaminophen to reduce fever and relieve muscle aches*
*do NOT give aspirin to children or adolescents with fevers
